Life is good in Elmhurst, Ohio. The war is over, the economy is booming, and the future looks bright. But just across the deep ravine known as Dog’s Run is a different life, one where times are always hard and dreams seldom come true. When Wanda Jean Reider, a beautiful young woman from the wrong side of town, is found dead in Dog’s Run secrets begin to come out. Secrets that will expose hidden sins and a dark side of life carried on behind the manicured lawns and inside the back rooms of the stores along Main Street. Secrets that will erupt in violence and lead to a showdown that will change the lives of some of Elmhurst’s best known citizens forever.
Nick Russell, New York Times bestselling author of the Big Lake mystery series, weaves a tale of intrigue, lust, and broken dreams that you will remember long after you finish the last page. One early reviewer said of Dog’s Run, “It’s gut-wrenching, fast-paced, sometimes crude, brutally honest, and often sad. It is also Nick Russell’s finest writing to date. Well done!"
Dog Run eBook Nick Russell
Russell does a fantastic job of describing life in the early 1950s, but it isn’t all good. Dog’s Run is a tale of family ties, murder, corruption and the desire to do the right thing at all costs. As usual Russell weaves an intricate tale with strong characters and scenes. I will say there is some graphic and disturbing content, and as unpleasant as it is, it certainly spurred the story forward. I very much look forward to the next book in this series.Typically I receive books for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review, however if I find an author whose work is exceptional, I will purchase their novels from that point forward. That is the case with Mr. Russell’s work, aside from the first Big Lake novel which I received for free, I have purchased all of his works (see all our reviews at [...] or on Goodreads at [...])

Dog Run eBook Nick Russell Reviews
DOG'S RUN is an excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The author's portrayal of small-town America, the snobbish town of Elmhurst, back in the 1950's, where the bad side of town is called Dog's Run, seemed authentic, and the characters, both good and bad, seemed so alive. My was like a movie screen as I read along. I could picture the inhabitants and their world just as if I were watching a picture show of them way back then in Dog Run's rundown theater. Historical, entertaining, and very creatively written, DOG'S RUN, in my book, is a winner!
The is an amazing story, that takes place in a small town setting. Extremely good detail read, with the upper crust people, and people in a poverty stricken place outside of the town. It is taking place in a time where people were racial, and bad language is used on a daily basis. 1940's war heroes, and greed beyond belief. Mr. Russell takes you on a guided tour of how things were during that time and place. You will be happy to read this book, because he keeps you so informed along the way. Good prevailed over evil. I would recommend Mr. Russell's books to anyone. Make sure you catch the series of Big Lake. Amazing books!!!

Nick Russell you keep me up way too late at night. I just finished Dog's Run and enjoyed it very much. I like all of Nick's books but this one takes you back when life should be innocent and "the good old days" which really weren't as the underlying politics of Elmhurst show you. The language is rough but true to that time period so no one should be offended, that's just the way it was back then. The relationship between Lester (the sheriff) and Robert(newspaper editor) is well defined and tested through events they have no control over. I wondered if there was a little of Nick showing up in Robert since Nick has owned a couple of newspapers. The story is told by several people, Lester, Robert and Wanda Jean. Nick I hope you continue with this series as you've done with Big Lake. I really liked the characters and story line in Dog's Run.
This is the kind of story that transports you to a place where things are a little darker, a little grittier, and more real than walking out your own door. This only happens when there's a talented writer working at the top of his game, and Nick Russell knocks it out of the park. If you've ever lived in a town that had a poor side, or a place "across the tracks", then you will immediately identify with Elmhurst and Dog's Run. Dialogue that is sharp as a razor, three-dimensional characters with warts and all, and an atmosphere of a time and place in our not-too-distant past. Do yourself a favor, read this one. You won't regret it.
Very interesting and tragic journey. Great characters that you care about, and you want to know how this story will end. The story takes place back in the 1950s. What takes place is heartbreaking and a little disturbing. I won't soon forget this book... The author did a fantastic job.
This was one of those books I read in one sitting. I ate it up quickly until the last few pages when I slowed down only because I wanted it to last longer. It really is a story I feel I lived in for a while. I cared so much about some of the people and couldn't wait to see others get what they had coming.
I found the story cut pretty close to the bone when it comes to corruption in small towns-especially in the small towns of that time period.
Nick Russell is an extremely good storyteller, but he is an absolute master at creating characters who live on his pages and stay on one's mind long after the last page is read.
I loved Dog's Run and it's unflinching portrayal of the lives and times of people on both sides of town - and the chasm both psychological and physical which separated them.
I hope there will be a sequel or two to Dog's Run. But since reading this book I am anxious to read Russell's other books - particularly the Big Lake series.
Life is innocent in the little town of Elmhurst when two young boys discover a body of a young woman at Dog's Run. What happens next will change the life of this little town and the people that live there.
Set in the early 1950's, some will object to the language used, as this isn't our politically correct modern times. But that is the way people thought and talked back in the "good old days." Corruption, greed and plain old bigotry rear their heads while a police chief and newspaper editor try to do what is right.
Russell's dialog is right on - taking us back to those days right after "The Big War" and before the era when people woke up to the bad things that were happening. One can hear their uncle's and father's conversations on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Dog's Run is a bit edgier than Russell's previous Big Lake series with less humor but is his best work ever. I couldn't put it down.
Russell does a fantastic job of describing life in the early 1950s, but it isn’t all good. Dog’s Run is a tale of family ties, murder, corruption and the desire to do the right thing at all costs.
